Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar Battery Systems

The difference between off-grid, hybrid and grid-tied solar battery systems, and which fits your needs.

Solar systems with battery storage come in three broad configurations — off-grid, hybrid, and grid-tied without storage — and choosing the wrong one means either overpaying for capability you don't need, or ending up without backup power when you actually need it.

Grid-tied (no battery)

Solar panels feed power directly to your home and any excess back to the grid (often via net metering), but the system shuts off during a grid outage for safety reasons — no battery means no backup power when the grid is down, even with the sun shining. This is the lowest-cost solar option but offers zero outage protection.

Hybrid (grid-tied with battery)

A hybrid system combines grid connection, solar panels, and battery storage — using solar and grid power interchangeably, storing excess solar for later use, and automatically switching to battery backup during outages. This is the most flexible and increasingly common configuration for Indian homes wanting both bill savings and outage protection.

Off-grid (fully independent)

A fully off-grid system has no grid connection at all — it must generate and store 100% of its own power needs, requiring meaningfully larger solar and battery capacity than a hybrid system to cover cloudy days without a grid fallback. This suits remote locations without reliable grid access, but is typically more expensive and requires more conservative sizing (higher autonomy days) than a grid-connected hybrid system.

Often yes, depending on your inverter's compatibility — some grid-tied inverters support a battery retrofit while others require a hybrid inverter replacement. Check compatibility with your installer before assuming a simple add-on.

Why does a grid-tied system shut off during an outage even with solar panels working?

This is a safety requirement (anti-islanding protection) preventing your system from feeding power back into lines that utility workers may be repairing — it applies regardless of how much solar power your panels are generating.

Is off-grid ever worth it for a home with grid access?

Rarely, for typical homes — a hybrid system usually gives equivalent backup protection at lower cost by using the grid as fallback. Off-grid makes sense mainly where reliable grid access genuinely isn't available.
